The Board of Education has seven members, each elected for a term of three years. Candidates for the Board must be qualified voters of the School District and are nominated by petition. Such petitions shall be directed to the clerk of the School District and include at least two percent of the number of voters who voted in the previous election.
To qualify for membership on a school board, an individual:
• must be able to read and write
• must be a "qualified voter" of the district
• must be and have been a resident of the district for a least one year prior to the election.
• may not have been removed from any school district office within the preceding one year
• may not reside with another member of the same school board as a member of the same family
• may not be a current employee of the school board
• may not simultaneously hold another incompatible public office
Nominating positions must be signed by at least 37 qualified voters, or 2 percent of the number of voters who voted in the previous annual election of the members of the Board of Education, whichever is greater.
Nominating petitions for specific seats on the school board must include the candidate’s name and residence, the residences of the people who sign the petition, the vacancy to be filled, including the name of the incumbent, and the length of the term of office to be filled.
All information on the top portion of the petition must be filled in and notarized prior to returning to the District Clerk.
Candidates may be nominated for only one vacancy. Nominating petitions must be filed for specific seats on the board. Petitions must be delivered to the District Clerk by 5:00 pm on April 19, 2010. The campaign contributions affidavit is also due at this time.
A "qualified voter" is a person who is a citizen of the United States, at least 18 years old, a resident of the school district for at least 30 days prior to the meeting at which he/she offers to vote, and who is not otherwise prohibited from voting under the provisions of S5-106 of the Election Law.

An application for an absentee ballot must be received by the district clerk at least seven days before the election if the ballot is to be mailed to the voter, or the day before the election if the ballot it to be issued to the voter in person.

No absentee voter’s ballot will be counted unless it is received in the office of the District Clerk, 1881 Deer Park Avenue, Deer Park, by 5:00 p.m. on the day of the election.
Budget Vote will be held on May 18, 2010 from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
