Parking Plans Reply
Dear not as I recall, LOL. What you remember is the former Principal bringing us the problem and a possible solution. Very rough draft with no information attached to it. We can't make decisions like that. We are now looking at solutions that actually have information attached to them. Also, with the new Principal coming on Board we thought it best to have some input from him. We will continue to pursue the best possible solution for all involved, as we always do.
Thanks again,
Dennis Ryan, President Deer Park Board of Education

Parking Plans
"We received our first one last Tuesday"

Really? First plan received last just last Tuesday? This has been a hot topic for quite some time now as I recall. I thought plans were presented quite awhile ago, I remember hearing about some sort of plan well before the end of the school year.
Not As I Recall

Thank You reply
Thanks for your input. However admin raises, teacher salaries, staff salaries do not have anything to do with our capital projects. Also, I have not heard since July 2007 the words we don't have money for our kids ever come out of mouths of the people on the BOE. The issue here is safety. The HS parking and traffic situation is unsafe and needs to be addressed. This issue was raise by concerned parents and staff and the BOE has asked for plans to alleviate the situation. We received our first one last Tuesday and we have sent it back for review. We will keep you up to date. Thanks again.
Dennis Ryan, President Deer Park Board of Education

Thank You!
Thank you Mr. Gouskos for being the voice of reason!

We parents feel the parking and bus situation needs to be addressed, but not like this. Every time we bring up issues that need to be addressed, we are always told there is no money. There is money for administrator raises, but not our kids. Now there is almost $100K for PARKING?

Your voice carries more power than ours. As you can see, by the time the meeting starts, those who have an agenda assume that their projects and ideas will merely be passed, no questions asked. Time to turn the tide.

Again, we thank you for having the guts to to be the one to FINALLY question.
Sure, let me give you my name!

Position Appointments Reply
Yes alot going on. This answer would better be served if it came from Ms. Marino and Ms. Demyen. Please feel free to call or email them with any questions. Also, I am sure there will be another BOE meeting that will go over the new organization chart and Educational direction. I'll make sure we get that meeting info out. It's pretty exciting stuff.

Thanks
Dennis Ryan, President Deer Park Board of Education

Position Appointments
There is talk around town about the new principals, assistants and such. Most are already aware that Mr. Cummings will be the principal at the HS but where does that leave everything else? Can you update us as to what has been decided as far as the positions being filled or changed at all of the schools? Thank you.
Parent

Contract Negotiation Reply
Yes we are negotiating Teachers and Teacher Assistant contracts. Yes would love to have it all settled. Everyone on both sides are doing their best to make this happen.

Thanks for your question
Dennis Ryan, President Deer Park Board of Education

Contract Negotions
Where does the district stand in terms of contract negotiations with the various district unions? I understand that quite a few of the unions are without contracts. Does the district plan on settling any of the contracts that are not settled by the start of the school year so that things start off smoothly? It is my understanding that the administrators, teachers, and teachers' aides are without contracts. What is the correct information on this matter? Thank you.

Recycling Reply
Thanks Donna for your question and actually using your name. It is so much better when I can actually feel like I am answering directly to someone. The district is going into a big recycling project with the Town of Babylon starting in the 2008-2009 school year that will cover all buildings. The project will force the district to seperate Bottles/cans/plastics and paper. We will also no longer use styrafoam in our district (over 1,000,000 pieces a year) thanks to a great report by 3 JFK students. It makes no sense to throw the textbooks away like you saw and I will forward your find ahead. Great job and thanks for the heads up.
Dennis Ryan, President Deer Park Board of Education

Recycling?
Please tell me why we don't dispose of unused text books by reclycling or donating. I was in the parking lot at the HS one day at the end of the school year and I saw the custodians throwing away textbooks in the dumpster. I actually took a few of them. Some were never used, Spanish books in excellent condition. I think this is a disgrace. Can you look into our policy on the disposal of textbooks? Hopefully, throwing them out is not the policy of our district and this was a one time mistake.
Donna Norton

Changes Reply
Yes there is alot going on. I know the past too. It is my belief that what is happening will benefit the students. They have been and always will remain my priority. Change always comes with worry, it does for me too. However, we need to keep moving forward, there are wonderful things happening all around us and you will start to see it over the summer. Yes things like computer and system upgrades, Student Information Systems, texxt books, facilities etc... Being a first year President on the BOE I don't want to get caught up in the past, I can only push towards a better future. I think that would be best. Hope you agree. Hang in there, in the end I believe we will have made the right choices. Thanks for your concern and as always stay involved.
Dennis Ryan, President Deer Park Board of Education

Changes
I have been reading all of these comments, sure are alot to take in. From what I have been able to piece together, our district is undergoing some big changes. The report card issue seems to be sitting the wrong way with many parents and community members. The district assures us that the new system is worth the cost, most of us in the community do not see that. I know many parents would much rather see newer text books and computers for our kids, not some system that really doesn't change much for them. Parents aren't happy.

I hear that we are also switching lunch companies and that this too will cost more, I hope it is worth it. I hope to see a substantial change in the quality of food, otherwise, just another waste of money.

There seems to be a big shake up with directors. Not sure what that is all about since it all happened so close to the end of the year.

I hope all of these sudden changes pan out and our district sees the benefits. I hope we didn't change too much at one time and spend too much of our precious resources on things that won't really matter to our kids.

Many of us want to be hopeful, but past history has made us very suspicious.
Worried DP

Report Card Reply
Report cards will be addressed over the summer. Seems everyone is in agreement. Ecspecially the Frost one.

Thanks for input.
Dennis Ryan, President Deer Park Board of Education

Report Cards
I have to agree that the new repot card system needs many improvements. I have spoken with other parents and the concensus is that it most certainly does not appear to be an improvement over the previous system. GPA's were not addressed on the Frost report cards, neither was honor roll standing. Our hard working children deserve to be recognized when they achieve outstanding academic acheivement. Can someone please explain how my child can have a negative attendence total? Average days absent were -0.022%. What does that mean? Please tell me us that these issues will be resolved. We appreciate your input.
One concerned parent speaking up for many others

Report Card
Thanks, I appreciate that! The new format is just awful and the honor roll, final average needs to be on there.

Thanks for the quick reply.
Tired Tax Payer

Report Card Reply
HI, brought your concerns about report card to admin. Found out that there is going to be revisions to the format over the summer to several report cards. I asked that your concerns be addressed and was assured they will.

Thanks for the info and caring.
Dennis Ryan, President Deer Park Board of Education

Report Card Reply
Dear Tired,

As a parent, please come to the BOE meeting so that you can speak about your frustration. Ms. Marino and Ms. Demyen would be more than happy to explain the new system to you. If you are also an employee it would be great to hear your perspective given to the Administration. Now let’s get to your message.

I know the report card is in a new format and will take some getting used to. I have also seen the new report card, but after a couple of reads it was easy to understand and will be easier in the future. Yes, it does have more to do than just notifying parents, of course it does. State Notification is also key to this system and that is directly tied to our state aid. The benefits in the long run are good for our community. No, it was not overpriced. What did you compare it to?

If you really understood my prior answer you would understand, that it is not the Infinite Campus System that is the problem it is the internal DPSD configuration that is the problem. This is being addressed this summer by Dr. Jared Bloom and the Technology team, so it should be fine by the new school year. You also state that not many school systems are using it. This too is not correct many school districts across the state are moving to internet based systems and Infinite Campus is one of the leading ones. We have to replace antiquated systems around the school district it is imperative to our future success.

Also, you take a shot with the waste of money and surprise comment? Don’t agree at all. As volunteers we work hard at trying to make the best decisions possible for our students and school district. We will continue to do just that. I really wish you understood all the time and work it takes. Look forward to seeing you at the Board of Education meeting so that you can have all your concerns addressed in person.

Thanks for your message
Dennis Ryan, President Deer Park Board of Education

Report Cards
Okay, not to beat a dead horse here, but the new attendance/report card system issue must be addressed again. We received the Frost report card, HATE IT! It is so difficult to read, does not give a final overall average, does not address honor roll, it is a disaster!

I cannot believe that this district put good money into a system that produces a product that is inferior to the previous system. I have to believe that there is more behind this move than making things accessible for parents.

The old report cards were so easy to read and understand, very clear, this thing is a mess!!

Maybe the district is benefiting from this new over priced system, but the community certainly is not.

I checked around, not many districts use this system, why did we pour money into this?

As a parent, I find it to be a mess! Waste of money, what a surprise!

Double Dipping Hypocrisy
Hi Everyone, at least we are above board. Could it be that the AG is looking to move to the Govenors mansion? We will protect this district and it's finances regardless of the retoric out of Albany.

Thanks,

Dennis

ALBANY - Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, who has blasted the overuse of double-dipping state workers, recently rehired a lawyer six months after
he retired with a $97,000 pension.

Assistant Attorney General Arthur Patane retired last June but got a
special "211 waiver" in January allowing him to collect his pension and
a $128,926 salary, records show.

Under the arrangement, Patane could make just under $225,000 this year.

Patane's waiver was granted just a day before Cuomo's office announced
it was expanding its pension probe to look into possible fraud by school
districts that hire retirees.

Cuomo chief of staff Steven Cohen said Patane was brought back, with the encouragement of the court, exclusively to finish a case he had been
working on before his retirement.

Once the case, an $8 million suit against the state Dormitory Authority,
is completed, Patane will go back into retirement, Cohen said.

"This is the very situation for which 211 waivers are designed," he
said. "It's a unique situation."

Patane is one of 133 double-dippers collecting a pension and state
salary in Cuomo's office, the highest total of any state agency, records
show.

Cuomo's office also wants four new waivers and two-year extensions for
six others. Cuomo aides say the waivers are needed to get experienced
investigators.

Cuomo has accused some Long Island school officials of abusing the
waivers to rehire old friends or cronies. Now some of those officials
are accusing Cuomo of "hypocrisy."

"Like the school districts he criticizes, Attorney General Cuomo
obviously recognizes the legitimacy of hiring uniquely qualified
retirees," said Timothy Kremer, executive director of the state School
Boards Association.

"Hopefully, any reforms will address the totality of this issue and not
just school superintendents."

Robert Lowry, deputy director of the state Council of School
Superintendents, added: "Maybe [Cuomo's office] has a good reason, just
like school districts have good reasons in some cases."

Happy to be Green
Thank You for your kind words. I would like to thank every BOE member & Administration member for a great year !! Our Energy Committee will be looking at every possible way to use renewable energy, operate efficiently , reduce carbon emmissions, & educate our children in the process. I would also like to thank Mr Ryan for creating this committee & Kirk Gostkowski ( Manager B& G) for making all of these projects happen !!!!
Keith Rooney

Go Green
Thank you Mr. Rooney for putting your expertise and influence with KeySpan and National Grid to good use here. We have been in dire need for many, many years of an upgrade to our current wasteful systems, particularly at the high school. Our last attempt to upgrade that system years ago left us with a nothing but the bill to pay for it, it never worked! Hopefully your expertise in the field will insure that we benefit from a functional, economical system this time.

I thank you for launching this initiative and working hard for our community. I saw you on News12 last night, well done.

Keep up the good work Mr. Rooney!!
Happy To Be Green

Directors / Admin Reply:
Hi, Yes in the 2007-2008 school year Ms. Barlum who has been part of our district family for many years was hired for a nominal fee to take district wide photos. Seems to have worked out well.

Question regarding Former Superintendent Burke and the rumors. I have to answer carefully because of litigation. However let it be known that Mr. Burkes resignation to the district was based solely on performance. This should be in no way construed in our community as anything other than that! There was no fraud, no hand in the till, nothing what so ever that would be a crime. Ban is a good man, it just did not work out here and we wish him well.

Interim Superintendent of Business: No on the increase. He receives no other benefits (health care etc...) I've got to tell you I am glad at this juncture for our community and district that he is here. It is our turn for the Statewide audit and having someone with his type of experience is invaluable to us all.

Thanks,

PS. hit the wrong key to post your message and it deleted. So I hope I remembered it well enough.

Computers and Waiting Reply
Dear Tired,

Sorry it took a little while to answer you. I do my best to get to these as soon as possible but sometimes between my job, family and graduation week it gets a little busy. Infinite Campus is not just a new report card system. It is an educational tracking system that not only can help parents and teachers but has direct link to the state for reporting which allows others to free up their time for more important things like education. It is state of the art and well needed.

As far as technology is concerned you are not exactly correct. Just a little more than 7 years ago we had nothing. It may be true that some computers are in need of upgrade and if so they will be. There is continuing plan that upgrades computers and all other IT equipment within our school district. This community spends and budgets very well for our school districts tech needs and we have hired a new Director of MIS that will help us even more for the upcoming school year. The slowness your children experience has nothing to do with hardware but more of the schematic of the equipment. We have analyzed this and it will be corrected this summer.

Please on the Chartwells, this community and the BOE were very disappointed in their performance for which it mattered most, our students. As far as the lowest bidder comment be aware that it is the lowest RESPONSIBLE bidder. The lowest bidder in this case, we feel is not a responsible group. Therefore what we did and do in all cases is legal.

As far as the changes in the district please contact Superintendent Marino or Asst. Superintendent Demyen. You could come and ask at the BOE meetings. They are the people who will best answer your question. About the comment you make regarding personnel questions can’t be answered? That depends, if you want to understand changes in the educational process, you can and will get an answer. If you want to know about personnel decisions they can be answered to however we can not get into personnel details about any employee and that is where the line gets drawn. So ask the question generally and you will get what you need.

Last but not least the resolutions on these changes just happened Tuesday so it would be normal for the people you speak to not knowing yet. It has to be rolled out. It is the responsibility of the Superintendent to set Educational process and she and her staff are doing just that. This is why we hired them.

As for the “as usual no answers” quote. This BOE and Administration has communicated better than any we have ever had. I for one in this volunteer role have never shied away from answering when needed. Look forward to seeing you at the BOE meetings.
Dennis Ryan, President Deer Park Board of Education

Directors and educational questions reply. Reply
To All, let's understand the BOE role. The BOEd's job is to hire a Superintendent of Schools, set policy, define and pass a budget and be the voice community when needed. We have an administration that plans the educational process and a wonderful staff that delivers it. The experts in answering questions about the educational process are Superintendent Marino, Asst. Superintendents Demyen and Caliguiri. It would be more appropriate for your questions regarding educational process or decisions made to be answered by them not the BOE. I am sure if you email them or even maybe come to the BOE meetings you would get the answers you are looking for. Thank you for your questions and look forward to seeing you.
Dennis Ryan, President Deer Park Board of Education

Waiting
Hi, I read through the posts and still haven't seen an answer to my question about he new report card system. How much did this cost and why wasn't this money used to upgrade the computers my kids use?

I know someone on here mentioned the food service, I hear we have a new service coming in. I also understand that this is the same company we had before Chartwells, if it is, THEY ARE TERRIBLE. I called a few people I know and found out that the new company was not the lowest bidder. Is this true? And if so, is this legal? I thought we had to take the lowest bidder.

I for one found Chartwells to be much better than the previous service, their food was terrible.

There is a rumor that there is a major shake-up going on in our district, administrators are being moved and or fired? Is this true? If so, what is going on, the public knows nothing about this and apparently neither does any current administrator, I have asked, they are in the dark. Did the district really make changes without letting the tax payers know what is going on? Did they really not inform the administrators also? Why so late in the year with the changes? Will new people be in place by September? Hiring over the summer is usually not an easy thing to do.

Sorry for the long post, but I have many questions and as usual, no answers. If we ask at BOE meetings about personnel we are told that it cannot be discussed and then the decisions are made behind closed doors and no one knows anything.

Please let the tax payers know what is going on in their district and how their money is being spent. Let us know about the issues that will affect our children.
Tired Tax Payer

Directors
What is the intention of the school district on the management of the subject areas? I heard through the grapevine that quite a few directors of certain subject areas were told that their positions were abolished and that other subject areas' directors positions were maintained. What areas were abolished and why? What areas were kept and why? Will there be a re-organization, and if so, what subjects areas will be grouped together? Now that the Frost principal will be the high school prinicipal, which other building principals will be moved and to what buildings? Please inform the public of the changes and re-organization and the reasons why. Thank you.
Deer Park Resident

Interim Superintendent reply
Search will continue. We will keep our present Asst. Superintendent of Business for at least one more year. We have done this correctly by the state rules and are very comfortable with the decision. Please come to the next BOE meeting and meet Gene and we can discuss your concerns there. Look forward to meeting you.

Thanks
Dennis Ryan, President Deer Park Board of Education

Lincoln School Reply
I'll check into it and let you know.

Thanks
Dennis Ryan, President Deer Park Board of Education

Double Dipping Reply re:
No on the rehired teacher part. But again if we ever needed it to benefit our students then we clearly would entertain the idea. We have searched and interviewed in March and April for the Asst. Business position but to no avail. In Fact we are doing it again now. This position, at this juncture in our district is to important to hire someone with little experience. As you are aware the State controller is auditing all school districts in the state. Our turn is coming and we better have an experienced Business Manager here. It is the right thing to do for this district and community.

Thanks
Dennis Ryan, President Deer Park Board of Education

Lincoln School
I am a very concerned parent. I have heard that the Lincoln school is infested with ROACHES!! This is absolutely unacceptable! I pay too much taxes to have my child attend a school that has ROACHES! This is unsanitary and quite frankly disgusting! Every parent should be made aware of the conditions their children are in. What are YOU going to do to correct these most unacceptable conditions?
Concerned Pre-K Parent

Interim superintendent
I sent a question a while ago and I haven't seen it answered as of yet.

Please let us know if a replacement has been found for the position of assistant superintendent of busines. How many candidates were interviewed and what were the results?
bangzoom828@aol.com

Another questions about Admin
Why did we hire a person to teach the SS Department how to grade the Regents. Don't we already pay someone to coordinate all of the admin and grading of the state exams?

Computers
I have a question that has been bugging me for some time now. My pet peeve with many of our schools has been our computers. So many of them are very, very old and the system is very, very slow. My kids as well as their friends will rarely use them, choosing to come home to do projects and research as the school computers are so painfully slow.
I just recently became aware that there is a new system being used for attendance and report cards. I started asking around when I saw the new progress report.
My question is this, how much did this new system cost, and why didn't we put that money towards new computers that our kids can use? My kids told me about teachers taking attendance on the computer now, but according to them, there are many times that the teacher has to wait long periods of time for the new program to load. I know the system is slow, my kids have complained about this often. I asked a friend who is an IT expert and was told that if the system is out of date and the computers are old, maybe the new attendance program is slowing it even more.

It today's tight times, I am very concerned that this might not have been the best way to spend out tax money. We have old text books, old computers and buildings in need of a lot of work, why are we spending money on things like this? Please spend the money on things that will directly benefit out kids, this does not.
Tired Tax Payer

re: double dipping reply
You mentioned that we haven't any rehired, retired teachers, but what about administrators? Has Deer Park rehired any retired teachers in positions other than teaching? Have you found a replacement for the position of Superintendent for business? How many candidates were interviewed for the position? Thank you.
DP resident

Double Dipping Reply
It's not that sensitive. One of the BOE jobs is to protect our district, our students and community. I find it almost laughable the way the media and politicians talk about double dipping. There is a clear shortage and need in allot of districts at certain positions and sometimes hiring interims is the way to go, until you can find the right new hire. Isn't it interesting that Cuomo's office has 135 retired and rehired employees yet no one questions that?

To answer your question about retired and rehired teachers? The answer is no. However, if the need came and it was the right thing to do for our students at the time, we would give it some thought.

Thanks for you question.
Dennis Ryan, President Deer Park Board of Education

Double Dipping?
I know this is a sensitive topic...this issue is not solely about administration. I would like to know how many teachers have retired with full pensions and have now been rehired? Some with positions possibly made up for them, that were not there before. Concerned taxpayer!!!

Taxpayers Money Reply
On the English question: Our director is out on maternity leave. There are a couple of co-ordinators picking up work, which is normal for this situation. Yes they receive a stipend.

Social Studies: the answer is no. However we have hired someone to come in and train people how to score the Regents test.

Thanks for the message.
Dennis Ryan, President Deer Park Board of Education

Taxpayer Money
Is it true that we are paying 3 people to do the job of one English Director and 2 people do run the Social Studies department?

Yes, the lockers must be secured prior to Regents exams! It isn 't so bad, my child carries all the books, gym clothes, etc. also. They will survive.

I believe it is b/c the school needs to be secured before finals and regents are taken next week.

Robert Frost Lockers Reply
Thanks for message. Not sure why I will find out. I agree thats tough on the students. I know I wouldn't want to carry my son's backpack around.

Thanks
Dennis Ryan, President Deer Park Board of Education

Robert Frost Lockers
I am a parent and many other parents were very upset that the Robert Frost Students had to carry all their books, incl. gym clothes, for over a week because the combinations for the lockers needed to be changed. Why can the school wait until the end of the school year for this?? It is bad enough that the students are carrying these heavy back-packs with all the books through out the year and now add more weight.
I think the school should change this for next year.

I look forward to a change because my son is in 6 grade and would have to do this for two more years.

This Heat
Thanks for the speedy reply, I know this situation was totally unpredictable, I do feel badly for the poor kids who had exams. I am sure it will be handled better should the situation come about again.

As for the Save Frost poster, I personally do not see that this will jeopardize Frost. Like you said, we have a superb administrator who I am sure would be wooed away at some point. I think everyone needs to hang in there, change, although scary, can be a good thing.

Let's through our support behind this decision and do all we can as parents and community members, to make sure it goes smoothly.
Worried Mom

Save Frost Reply
It's not that simple. We have a great leader that other schools will be after someday soon. We believe in this man and he believes he is ready for the next step. Let's wish him all the luck in the world and support our collective decision. The middle school has been on such a good path and it is sure to continue. We will always do the best we can for the students.

Thanks

This Heat Reply
Thanks for the thanks on the message board, I agree it could be a great forum.

The heat issue is a concern. I brought it up last night and the BOE has asked that we look into a solution when it gets this way. We too are worried. Imagine having to take a final in that condition. Hang in there I will let you know what we do. Thanks for caring.

Concerned Parent

This Heat
I think this message forum is fantastic, thanks for having an avenue for parents and community members to voice concerns or applaud good deeds.

First, a thank you to the employee looking out for our kids and their nutritional needs regarding the lunch issue post! Good work, we parents thank you!

While I realize that the heat of the past two days is unusual and there is not much anyone can do about it, I do have some concerns. I have a child at the high school. I know that for some reason this building has terrible air circulation and therefore on hot days is unbearable. The cafeteria is positively inhuman. My child came home sick from the heat today. The cafeteria was so oppressively hot that it was impossible to do more than sip water, which by the way, should have been provided to the students to ensure proper hydration.

I am not blaming the school or the district for the heat, but shouldn't some sort of precautionary measures have been taken given the fact that other districts were closing early and providing water to students? I am not aware that anything was done to help. My child was in a classroom that measured 100 degrees, that is more than hot, that is dangerous.

Did Ms. Marino or Ms. Demyen visit the high school or any of the other buildings to see for themselves the conditions? If they did not then shame on them, they should have. I certainly hope they did not spend their day in air conditioning while my child was being made sick by the heat. 100 degrees with poor air quality makes people sick. My pediatrician was appalled and not at all happy.

I know that we make it through some warm weather every year, but this week's weather was extreme and to my knowledge, no one from the district office did much to check on the kids, much less actually do something about it.

Pardon my harshness, I am not usually a complainer, I don't believe in pampering the kids at all. I survived without air conditioning all through school, but the conditions today and yesterday were certainly well within the danger zone. I certainly think that some sort of plan should be in place to deal with dangerous conditions such as this. We did not use any snow days, would closing early really have been such a big deal? Other districts did it, so I think not.

I appreciate you reading my lengthy post but when it comes to my kids and their health, I get pretty fired up. I trust the district to look out for them during the day, after today, I am not sure that is a wise move any longer.
Worried Mom

Chartwells Food Service
Dear Mr Ryan
I work in the district and I see first hand the lunches that are being sent from Chartwells Main office to the elementary schools. The selections are far from healthy and the children are offered things they won't even try.I agree that the selections should be nutritious but if the students throw it away without trying what is the use. In the beginning of the year they even took away the "jelly" from peanut butter and jelly and substituted cranberry sauce in it's place because it was free. I am sure a lot of parents are not aware of the situation and the poor quality of the food.
Thank You

Congratulations to Dennis and Ron
I just wanted to stop by and say Congratulations to Dennis and Ron on their election to the Board.

On a more private note - I find it very insulting that just DAYS after my loss in last years school board election, people were complaining about the fact that my signs were still around town. Well - I still drive down streets around town and see yellow signs in the ground as well as signs still nailed to telephone poles - (which last time I checked was illegal to begin with) for Cangero and Parvey, and we are now 2 WEEKS after the vote. If you are going to put signs around town - make sure they ALL come down. Keep a list like I did that way locations are not missed - then again - I had help considering vandals were taking my signs down days BEFORE the election.

Again, Congratulations to Dennis and Ron.

Sincerely,

Hi Nancy,

The District is in the process of reviewing options that will lead to a Request for Proposal from the different food service providers out there. We will keep everyone up to date as the decision draws near. We have heard from numerous people on the situation. Thanks for the input.

Chartwells Lunch Program
I am imploring you to stongly consider not to use Chartwells for next year's food service. I know they are doing everything possible to get in. Today for example they are having fresh salads and fruits at the H.S. and Middle school, which they do not ordinarily have available. I was on the district's Nutrition Committee and can tell you their food service is terrible. I can tell you many parents have the same request. Please do not renew their contract. There has got to be a better quality food service out there. I would rather pay more money for school lunch and know that my child will have a better selection and a much more nutritious lunch.

Message Board
Hi Everyone, I want to thank the community for having enough faith in re-electing me to my 4th term as a volunteer BOE trustee. I can't believe how fast these 9 years went by. I promise we will keep moving forward.

To my students who came out to vote. Thanks for coming out for me and all the text messages of encouragement. You know it's about you!

Now that the election and budget vote is over it's time to go back to having this message board be about happenings or concerns within the school district environment. This message board was never intended to be a blog site. I am sure that the negotiations will move along and we will come to a fair agreement. I know that is what both sides want and will achieve. Negotiation years are always a bit strange, but the history in DP is that they eventually, always work out. It's my third one and it always seems to be this way.

We have had a tremendous and successful year with less than a month to go. Let's just all take a deep breath, have faith and have a fantastic finish.

Thanks again.

teachers boycotting? ...disgusting!!
Thank you Dennis for doing the best job you possibly can in these very stressful times. I challenge many to sit in your seat and try to make the best decisions in so many different areas. Mainly the students and the respectability of our school district, while keeping the hard working taxpayer in mind. At the same time you are restricted by state mandates and laws. Any teacher that trashes our town and school district by boycotting or otherwise should be ashamed of themselves. I advise them to pack up and go find a job somewhere else. I know of many wonderful, talented, dedicated teachers who are just waiting for them to leave. I don't need my taxes to go up so you can buy lunch. Make your lunch like many of us do because we can't afford to feed you!!

Mr. Ryan

I have mentioned the issue many times and I have been told it costs too much. Not sure why or if that is true. Maybe a directive from the BOE might help kick start the effort.

Agreed. Thanks.

Parking at the High School
There is absolutely no truth in the statement that my daughters parking ticket was paid by the district. Yes, I was upset about SCPD writing tickets to students who are authorized to park in the lot but cannot find a space due to unauthorized students parking their cars in the marked stalls. Before I agree to ticketing students, we should be assured that only properly authorized vehicles are using the spaces. We are working on changes to this issue. Thanks for your input, but I paid the fine.
Bob Marino

Community College
There's nothing wrong with a community college Mr. Ryan. I encourage my students to pursue this route all of the time because it's much cheaper and much more affordable to DP residents. Go to a community college and then transfer after two years to a four-year college. The BA or BS degree from the four-year college will be the one that goes on the resume anyway. You'll probably save about $50,000 by doing that. Worked for me.

Cocerned Taxpayers Teacher Answer
I guess you have not looked at the signs lately. All Ryan and Wayne signs were down by Wednesday night. Last I looked all Union signs for your candidates are still up.

As far as your threat to the businesses in Deer Park. That's sad but it is your decision. I wonder what the average Teacher pay in Deer Park is. Could the BOE answer that for us? Don't worry we'll give the businesses in Deer Park a heads up. With your post.

To: Concerned Taxpayer
Last I check Ryan/Wayne also has signs on Town polls.

P.S. As a DP teacher, I and others are going to boycott DP businesses until our contract is settled. Sorry to the businesses, but if the district holds us on step again, then I can't afford to buy lunch everyday and shop at CVS, ect... If this has any impact on the community we won't know. But State laws forbid teachers from striking. This takes away any power from collective bargaining, since the whole basis of CB is based on the power of the employee to walk out and the power of the employer to lock-out. Lets call a spade a spade. The BOE has teachers wrapped around its finger. They can hold us on step and not have any punishment. READ THE TRIBROUGH LAW, Yet if we strike, we lose 2 for 1 days pay and our leaders can go to jail. How come the BOE doesnt get fined for breaking the law???

Congrats shot answer
I don’t know why bashing me about going to a community college makes you happy but I will say this. I know many teachers that have gone to a community college to pick up courses as well as many community members. I believe our local community colleges do a good job and have a lot to offer. To any of our students who are attending community college, I apologize for this message senders ignorance. We are proud of you for continuing your education. This is EDU-elitism at its worst. One of the things I always regretted was not being able to afford going to a 4 year college or University however at the time with my father passing away and my mom raising 6 kids on her own money was really tight. So, I took a different course and it has worked out pretty well.

Let’s look at the ED.D shot also. The BOE as you are unaware is responsible for setting policy, putting together a budget that will pass and representing the students, parents and community. The BOE does not set the Education path; we already have that expertise in Superintendent Marino and Asst. Superintendents Demyen and Caliguri. They are doing a great job. The community is lucky to have them.

As far as Deer Park people not having a clue, that is wrong. We live in a great community that works hard and cares about its school district. I would not want to be anywhere else. Talk about clueless. I will not be anonymous like you.

Hi, the message you received did not come from the district in any way shape or form. That message came from a local organization who supported Mr. Wayne and myself, just as they had done in years past for other candidatets. I would never and have never used any dictrict list or system to campaign. Sorry it took so long to post and answer this. It's just that I had to wait till the vote was over so I would not get accused of using this message board for the election. I know that sounds crazy but it's true. Thanks

Budget Question Answer
Yes if the budget went down you still would have seen a small decrease. We have a great community here. We are working on the budget and tax situation. I know it's easy to believe it's all about school district taxes, however the BOE can not be responsible for laws that make it difficult practically hand cuff us in keeping spending in line, it even hurts how we are able to compensate our great staff. Examples of this would be the Wicks and Taylor Laws. We have no say in Heathcare Costs or Pension/retirement systems because they are regulated by the Assembly and Senate of New York State. The federal side is just as bad. There are two programs that are mandated on us. The first is IDEA, in this program alone the Federal Government owes us $19,000,000 from the last 7 years. The second is NCLB which now in it's 5th year the Feds already own us $7,000,000. We lobby hard to get this owed money but it seems tro fall on deaf ears in Congress. We are working hard to help the tax payer of Deer Park and will continue to try. I hope you can stay here. Thank you for the question.

8th grade trips ????????
My son is in 8th grade and I would like to know why they have no class trips planned. Can someone tell me why we pay almost $9000.00 a year in taxes and the high school look like a abandon building. My sister lives in Centereach and her son is in 8th grade and he went to Boston and this week Washington DC. Her taxes are 1/2 of Deer Park’s. Tell me why the kid in this town cant have that experience. Because when you do trips like this helps kids think bigger have bigger dreams. I am home owner and I hope some one can get back to me.

Middle School at High School
Sir,

What you said does not make much sense. Why would the Robert Frost kids be at the high during school hours. Are they not in school at the same times? So you have not addressed the question about why the middle school kids are being told by security they are not allowed at sports functions!

Parking at the hight school
I had heard that the school district paid the parking ticket of the daughter of one of the board members. The girl was parked illegally at the high school (this, after a flyer was mailed home explaining the parking regulations). The police were called, the girl was ticketed. I heard the father of the girl ( a board member) was very upset and got the district to pay the ticket.

I know how stories get misconstrued -- what is the truth to this?

Re: Frost students "not allowed" at HS
If your child was with students who were skateboarding on school grounds that could explain a comment being made to them. Be aware that this seems to be a popular activity for some Frost students (and fewer HS students) lately and although most of us would agree that kids should have a fun physical activity to participate in and that there is nothing inherently wrong with skateboarding, there are safety concerns with busy parking areas and foot traffic on paved areas around building entrances/exits during afterschool hours to say the least.

Candidates for School Board
To the 2 candidates Ms. Parvey & Mr. Cangero. I didn't know where else I might communicate this and I have great disdain for the comment boards on Newsday. According to Town of Babylon code, it is illegal to post signs on poles. Please refer to 213-390. I find it quite hyprocritical that you would think one would vote for you to be a part of our school board and manage our taxes in order to best educate our children when you can't even obey a simple town code. Not only is it against the law, it diminishes the quality of life and really is quite dangerous as people get distracted while driving and trying to read these signs.(which maybe a reason tof why it is prohibited).

Privacy is Important
In my previous note, I asked about why an endorsement of two incumbent school board members was sent to my e-mail address. To my mind, the only way that this could happen was if a district contact list was used to disseminate this information, which I believe to be a violation of state law. I also inquired about some of the claims in the endorsement. I believe that my note was what Mr. Ryan responded to in a post to the message board. I don't know this to be the case, since my original note was not published on this message board.

Given that my e-mail address was so flagrantly mis-used during the incident that sparked this e-mail, why I would now provide the DP BOE with a phone number is beyond me. The last thing I want is to receive calls endorsing candidates on my taxpayer dollar. My privacy is very important to me, as I'm sure it is to many other members of the Deer Park community. I thank Mr. Ryan for his offer, but for the reasons stated above, I'll decline.

As to the math in Mr. Ryan's reply, it does seem to be correct, though intended to be incendiary. By presenting five years worth of pay increases as a compounded multiple of 40-anything percent, it makes it seem like teachers want something that is outside the realm of what all other public sector employees receive. I also find it curious that after saying that he cannot use district web services to electioneer, Mr. Ryan then engages in a bit of electioneering on the district message board.

I am glad that I was able to contact the DPTA to hear their side of the story. They also heartily encouraged me to vote for the budget this Tuesday, and seemed surprised that anyone would think that they had not endorsed it (contrary to the claims in the email that I originally received).

It pains me that negotiations have gotten this strained in our district. I hope that both sides can work to find an amiable and quick solution without having to resort to dishonest number-crunching and baseless accusations.

Like my first notes, perhaps this note is not worthy of being shared with the general public, either?

Sincerely
Concerned Near Commack

Great Job

Not Happy
Mr. Ryan,

I am quite sure that this message, like those of my friends', will not appear on the board, but I know you will read it.

I am a teacher in another district, however, I am a Deer Park Resident. I have tried to keep myself informed and up-to-date as to what is going on in my community. I have been to BOE meetings, the ball fields, community events, and I have many friends and acquaintances who have been in your presence at various events.

I have one simple question for you, Why do you continually bash teachers? I have heard it with my own ears, my friends have heard it, other community members have reported it. Are you not the President of the the Board of Education? Doesn't education require teachers? It does in my district.

I fully understand the fiscal implications of contract negotiations. I also fully understand the economic conditions of the world we live in presently. I am a tax payer also, I have no desire to see my taxes sky-rocket. However, I fail to understand why a person who claims to want to move the district forward would create such hostility and dissension in our beloved district.

I have heard you speak with disgust about teachers, sometimes the remarks have been quite vile. Do you truly hate the teachers of your district that much? If you hate them so, why do you send your children to our schools?

I won't get into numbers with you, but suffice it to say, I make significantly more money than Deer Park Teachers. One of the many reasons I have refused to take a job in this district. The biggest reason however, is the manner in which teachers are treated here. I put the blame for that squarely on your shoulders. You have encouraged this community to teacher bash. You have used some very nefarious methods in that pursuit.

You have put into place an administration that is beholden to you. Yes, many of us do know the histories of our past and present administration. We also know the stories as to their departures from other districts as well as this one. The extension of contracts I'm sure came with strings attached. We are not stupid Mr. Ryan, many of us know what is going on and it is a blight upon our community.

I have never felt the need to publicly state any of this, even after years of disgust, but I have now reached the end of my rope. Your recent inappropriate and according to election law, illegal activities have provoked my ire. I will no longer sit quietly by and neither will my friends and neighbors. We will take back our schools, we will respect those who educate our children. The reign of terror is over, the power plays are finished. Let's truly focus on what is important, the children of our community.

Deer Park needs help and we intend to give it!
Frustrated Teacher

Budget
It has been stated that the average taxpayer in Deer Park will see a decrease of approximately $27 in their annual school tax if the budget is approved. If the budget is defeated, would that savings increase?

The proposed budget is 4,300,000 higher than last years budget. Even if forced to go to a contingency budget, wouldn't it result in a larger reduction in our taxes due to the fact that the State increased the aid to districts?

You have to understand that I want the best for my kids, however, there are times when parents have to say no. When the schools are forced to make cuts they should have to distribute the cuts evenly not just threatening the parents with increased class size, loss of programs and the like.

Do we really need two more assistant principals? The enrollment is not increasing enough to justify the additional salaries. The superintendent is earning $183,000 (plus benefits) per year. Does an additional $9000 really make that much difference to her? Deer Park needs to add up all those amounts they consider "small" and look at the greater picture.
A very concerned taxpayer who is thinking about relocating far away

What does this have to do with her question?
"Dawn, I checked our records for the different committees we have in place; I did not see your name on any of them. "

Flyers, Elections, Email and 43%
I unfortunately can't use the BOE website to answer questions about the election or send out emails. However if you give me a call and leave me a message with your phone number I will certainly call you back and explain all that is going on. It's a shame. As far as the 43% number I was wrong. The ask to the BOE was the following, and If you take the true value it is the really around 47%. A 5 year deal. 5% year 1 , 5% year 2, 5% year 3, 5% year 4 and 5% year 5. This plus the increment. The increment can be anywhere from 2.8% to 3.2%. Let's use 3.0%. Take the 5% and the 3%. Add them together that gives you 8% per year. That gives you 40%. Now compound that for years 2,3,4 and 5 and that gives you approximately 47%. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks for your questions. Look forward to talking to you.

Answer to Robert Frost at High School
Dear Concerned Parent, I would bet that Robert Frost Students are not allowed at High School during School Hours. Just like High School Students would not be allowed at Frost during it's school hours, unless of course there was permission granted by either building principal and I would assume the parent. I am sure you can understand why. As far as attending events goes I can tell you from experience that our events are attended by everyone from all schools and grades. I am thinking it was just a mis-understanding. If it is other wise have your child speak to Mr. Cummings or Mr. Wallace, I am sure they will be able to explain the situation to them. Thank you for your message.

They were your flyers, I thought you put them there since you were campaigning at the school that night. Maybe someone else took them and stuck them in the cars. Oh well, no harm, just a bit annoying. Thanks for the reply.

Robert Frost Not Allow at High School
I have a question/concern. My children were told that they are not allowed on high school property and if they are caught there they will be suspended from school. (This is my children telling me, so we will take that for where it comes.) But my question is, if my children want to go to the high school to run on the track, attend a high school sports event - why can they not attend? My children and myself do use the high school track to walk/run. And they do from time to time go to see their friends who are playing on the high school teams play! So why are they being told they can not attend these things to cheer there friends/school on!
A concerned parent!

Flyers
Hi Friendly neighbor, sorry about that. I am not a fan of flyers under windshield wipers either. Will try to keep it from happening again.

Thanks for the message

Dennis

Flyers
While I understand that it is election time, I really would appreciate it if we could avoid the flyers on the windshields. I was at the high school last night for "Are You Smarter Than A High School Student" and was not thrilled to discover that I had a flyer jammed under my wiper blade. I didn't realize this until I was on DPA. Very annoying!! Flyers were scattered in the lot, seems like a waste of time and paper to me. We are making a big push to "Go Green" and and conserve, why not save paper and skip the flyers?
I think just being and the events and campaigning there should be enough, does anyone really read the flyers anyway?
Hate to complain, but those are my pet peeves.

high school athletics-sportsmanship
Dear Mr. Ryan,

I am a parent from the Eastport South Manor School District. Our girls' lacrosse team is scheduled to play your team on 5/16/08. This is the same day as our junior prom. Our team currently includes 11 junior girls. We have been trying to reschedule the game and despiite the cooperation of section XI , your varsity coach is unwilling to reschedule. I find this so disheartening. Isn't the high school athletic field a place to teach sportsmanship as well as athletic skills? I would think that school districts would work together to teach our scholar athletes the importance of compromise, flexibility and cooperation. Our junior girls cannot play in the game and get home in time to get ready for the prom. A prom...is that a reason to reschedule a game? In the eyes of sixteen and seventeen year old girls it is! As the president of the board of education I thought that you should know about this. It really is not a very positive reflection on the sportsmanship of the Deer Park High School Athletic program.

Very truly yours,

Answer to Squandering Taxpayer Dollars from Dennis Ryan
Hi Dawn,

Thank you for your inquiry.

Since taking over as President of the BOE I am sure you are aware of our push to change the way we use and produce energy across our entire school district. The reason you are aware of the issue at the Washington building is because of the energy audits that this BOE has asked for and received. The BOE is going to fix the issue around our school district and you can be assured that the Washington building is in our sites as well. I don't agree with your comments of misuse or squandering taxpayer dollars, in fact this Board of Education has done the following just since July 2007:

1.) Complete Energy Audit of 9 Buildings for free.

2.) Will be replacing 4 old boilers with new High efficiency fusion boilers for free.

3.) Will transition our natural gas rate categories to help save us taxpayer dollars.

4.) Will go from a 70% efficiency rating on our boilers to a 95% efficiency rating to help save taxpayer dollars.

5.) We will see an additional $0.20 saving per gallon on our purchase of fuel oil as well as a drop in our natural gas price saving us a quarter of a million dollars a year.

6.) We have approved the installation of light sensors at the H.S. and Robert Frost Middle school to save electricity by shutting off lights automatically when there is no one in the room. Again a savings to the taxpayer and we will be proceeding to do all buildings in district.

7.) This is the big one Dawn, by making these transitions we are we will reduce the amount of carbon emissions into the Deer Park air by 752 TONS. This makes for a healthier school district and community.

Rest assured Dawn that we are on it. The waste and squandering you may have seen in prior years is over. Also, just so you are aware the 2008 -2009 upcoming school budget will be a (-0.41%) which means there is no tax increase in fact a small decrease. When was the last time you seen that happen around here?

Dawn, I checked our records for the different committees we have in place; I did not see your name on any of them. I thought that you might be interested in joining the buildings and grounds committee or the energy committee we could always use help. Give it some thought. Being a volunteer myself on the Board of Education I know it's a time commitment, but if you would like to we would love to have you.

If you knew me at all you would know that I always have the best interests of my students and community in my heart.

Sincerely Yours,

SQUANDERING OUR TAXPAYER DOLLARS!
It is with great concern as a Deer Park resident and taxpayer that I write to inquire about the use or should I say misuse of the budgetary funds that are being squandered on energy costs for the George Washington Elementary school which as I understand does not even operate as a “school” for the children of Deer Park residents and taxpayers. More than $129,000 annually are expended on energy costs alone! I hesitate to even think that there may be other costs, such as maintaining the property, waste removal, and cleaning the facility, to name a few, that we are not being made aware of.

The Deer Park community relies on the Administration, Board of Education and other officials to be mindful of our taxpayer dollars and we rely on you all to ensure that our money is being spent wisely and without wastefulness.

How can this justified? What is being done to remedy this serious disregard for our taxpayer dollars?

We all work hard to live here in Deer Park and many of us struggle to pay increasing taxes each year. We deserve to be confident in knowing that you are looking out for our best interests as a community! Unless my reading of these most recent energy reports is not accurate, this does not appear to be the case.

I look forward to a reply.
